What is up with the arrogant attitudes of the new influx of San Francisco residents towards those that they are displacing? Even the mayor’s!

The SFBG (San Francisco Bay Guardian) wrote the most dead on point article on SF’s housing crisis and Mayor Ed Lee’s acknowledgement of it (as well as partial cause).  It is so well written that i am including  it in its entirety.   Thank you SFBG!!

Ed Lee’s State of the City: What evictions? What displacement?

Mayor Ed Lee punctuated his State of the City speech with a nice little quip: “Every San Franciscan deserves a clean, safe place to call home.” I agree.

So why, in a speech lasting more than an hour, did the mayor not once mention that thousands of San Franciscans are facing the loss of their homes — and will be forced out of the city — because of the same policies that he’s proudly promoting?

These things are always self-congratualtory and full of the requisite bullshit. But Lee’s description of the State of the City was nothing more than a fantasy to the two-thirds of San Franciscans who live in rental housing, many of whom are living with an unacceptable level of insecurity. Much of the city’s rental stock — and the effectiveness of rent control — is at risk at speculators are buying up properties, tossing the tenants out with the Ellis Act, and converting them to tenancies in common. This is a massive civic crisis, brought on in part by the boom in tech jobs and the consequent boom in high-paid young people who want to live in a city that has virtually no vacant housing.

We saw this before, under Mayor Willie Brown; we called it the Economic Cleansing of San Francisco. It was awful, and it’s happening again.

But you wouldn’t know that to hear the mayor completely ignore the issue.

Oh, Lee gave it a toss-off line; gee, the rent is too high, but we can’t ignore the laws of supply and demand. Gee, we’re going to build 45,000 new housing units, and that will fix everything.

But Lee, of all people, ought to know that housing in San Francisco has never followed the laws of supply and demand. This is a highly irregular market, because demand is essentially unlimited. Housing fills us as fast as you build it. And none of the new housing that’s currently under construction or in the pipeline will be affordable to current SF residents who live in rent-controlled units and are at risk for eviction.

When you’re evicted under the Ellis Act in San Francisco today, to make room for someone with more money, you wind up having to leave the city. That’s the bottom line. And everywhere you turn, tenants are facing that ugly prospect.

The mayor spent much of his time talking about jobs. That’s fine; he’s proud that the unemployment rate in the city has fallen to 6.5 percent, but he insists he won’t rest until everyone has a job. Actually, most economists would say that’s impossible; capitalism, by its nature, exists with a structural unemployment rate that rarely falls below 4 percent. In fact, 4 percent is generally considered “full employment.”

More important, the overall rate is 6.5 percent, but it’s way higher for people without college degrees, for youth, and for African Americans. (It’s above 50 percent for transgender people.) The tech boom isn’t providing jobs for all of the unemployed current San Francisco residents; a lot of the jobs are going to people who don’t live here and are moving here for employment. They are putting pressure on the existing housing stock. That always leads to displacement.

None of this is to say that tech jobs are bad or that we shouldn’t have companies that pay high wages locate in San Francisco. What it means is that the city first has to protect its existing vulnerable populations — and that’s not happening.

I would encourage Mayor Lee to talk to the Housing Rights Committee, or the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, or any of the other tenant lawyers who are fighting desperately every day to state off evictions. He’d get a very different picture of the state of the city.

I of course can not NOT comment on a topic i have such a personal interest and stake in (I have seen this happen twice now in 20 years all being within the last 12.)

Some migration of low-income SF’ers from SF to Oakland ir probably natural, helpful and desirable.

This short sentence really irked me.  BADLY.  It is this smug attitude that this new migration is brimming with and it really makes me steam.   Here is my response…

That is… EXCEPT when it is your turn to be forced out of the place you have contributed to and called your home for 20, 40 or 60 years.  Then you will probably leave out that last word and maybe the term “helpful” as well.  Then you will know that every word that the author just wrote is DEAD ON TARGET.  If you think there is a problem with what the author is saying, i would bet anyone $100 that you have not lived in SF for more than 10 years and more likely only around 1-4 years.  YOU are the displacers!  Dont you see?  Do you feel any empathy to what pain you are causing good people that are losing their livelyhoods because you are here now and are working in a new field that many reg. SF residents are not professionals in.  Anyone over 40 was not born and raised with ANY computer until maybe like age 20!  How on earth could anyone in the older sector ever compete with the youth generation.  Where is any empathy or remorse with the people that are taking over SF?  It seems like they like to argue for their new SF but dont acknowledge any part that they may play in the negative aspects.  Pass the responsibility to the poor victims that they are creating… that seems to be the general attitude i have observed with this new influx.  There is not a lot of respect.  And NO acceptance for diversity!  That is what this town is made from.  It is a really sad day. I thank you author for summing up my daily thoughts perfectly.  The ones that dont, will probably never get it….

What do you think the answer to this civic nightmare?  Any thoughts?  I think you get the gist of mine if you have been reading my blog for any amount of time!… Thanks for reading!

The REAL reason that they are STILL plugging $$ into a new San Francisco underground route… Straight through Chinatown. Surprise!!

We have this really awesome little local pet store a block down from my house.  It is exactly what a small business should be in my eyes.  It is small but big enough over the years to have expanded into the next door space too.  There is the sweetest gay pair (dont know if they are business partners only or a couple or what but it is definitely their baby!) of guys that run it.  It employees local young folks, they are very knowledgeable, they have great quality pet foods, and they (at least Tony who is born and raised in SF.  The other guy has lived here for the majority of his life if not whole if i had to guess) are fully aware of all of the things and changes that have been and are happening in the city.  They see it for what it is from the eyes of a real established not only resident but also small business owner.  They know what has really been happening in SF even through the glossy PR campaigns put on by the Mayor and his cronies.

The new people that have just flooded into our little (was) utopia, only see it for what it is right this minute with the help of glossy adds from the city PR machine.  They have no understanding or feeling of responsibility towards knowledge of this town, their neighborhood or even their house’s history.  Or,  what had to happen, and who did it, for it to be the way it is now.  Now that they have “discovered” this cute little contemporary city.  If they did actually know about this city and the real players in it, they would definitely

our dear muni underground rail (the J Church here)

get the joke that Tony from Bernal Beast told me today which had me in absolute stitches and actually gave me a visual for a painting.

We were talking about how SF has been hi-jacked and sold-out!  And that the reason that they are STILL spending SO MUCH MONEY to put a muni line underground to go through Chinatown to Fisherman’s Wharf. (i guess cable cars are not enough these days…) until Tony goes…

“building it right to Rose Pak’s house!”  I cant believe i didnt think of that!  That makes SO MUCH SENSE!!

And, for all of those newbies who just flooded into this town, You better find out fast who Rose Pak is because she yields more power than our scandalous mayor Ed Lee.  She and Willie Brown work hand and hand and they have been running this town through both Gavin Newsom’s tenure as well as our fake-a-mayor Lee.

Anyway, for those of you in the know, you should find that joke funny.  AND ironic/true!  I want a muni line to my front door step!  Too bad i am not rich and powerful and Chinese!

Supervisors reinstate Mirkarimi, rejecting Lee’s interpretation of official misconduct | SF Politics OH HELL YEA!!!

Supervisors reinstate Mirkarimi, rejecting Lee’s interpretation of official misconduct | SF Politics.

This is the first victory for the old progressive SF since our awful and horrid mayor ED LEE took (stole) office!

See folks.  No matter how much political witch hunting and lies and public pushing of their agenda, the truth still rules the law!  I think greedy Ed Lee fucked himself up by lying on the stand when asked if he tried to talk him into stepping down and he said no because he not only asked Ross, but a couple other sups.  including Aaron Peskin who said he would not lie and take the stand if called.

This is the beginning of the end for our fucked up mayor Ed Lee.  I hope at least.  He deserves to be recalled!  What a waist of tax payer money!!

It will be anything but dull that is one thing i think anyone can count on!

Ok. It is time to call out San Francisco Govt. on its quest to rid its self of all progressive(s)

Ok.  Lets just call the big pink elephant in the room out.  It is so obviously clear that there is a strong movement coming from the anals of our high ups in the corrupt world of politics & greed.  Now SF looks like a circus in the world views of city govt. all in order to squeeze out ANYTHING standing in their way of under the table deals, political back scratching and money making crony appointments.

It started with our dear mayor Ed Lee.  Lee was appointed to the post upon the early departure of sitting mayor Gavin Newsom.  When this happened, Mr. Lee made NUMEROUS promises not to actually run for the position when his appointment ended.  He waited until most of the candidates had burned out most of their funds to campaign with and then came on with HEAVY heavy advertising.  He also (and most importantly) had the backing of the political powers that (although not in office, hold more power than those in politics now) can hand anyone that they chose the position.  Some of these powerhouse names include Mr. Willie Brown, Ms. Nanci Pelosi, Gavin Newsom and his backers the Gettys to name a few.  Needless to say, Ed Lee somehow won the mayoral election although i do not personally know of one single person who did vote for him (which doesnt mean a thing i know.)

Next it was the vicious attack on Sheriff Elect Ross Mirkirami and the BS domestic violence charge and the character slaughtering of our former Supervisor in the court of public opinion.  I of course do not condone any act towards women of violence… However, when the spouse of said abuser says publicly that she is NOT being abused and this is a political witch hunt, after watching the BS unfold, i would say she is absolutely right.  When on earth does a DA put into place a protective order for some one other than themselves?  Ms. Lopez said publicly did not want any order of protection put onto Mr. Mirkirami but DA does it anyway, that is shady if nothing else.  The political left is after total domination of the San Francisco govt. landscape and tearing a family apart is just part of the casualties of its war… No big deal right?  NOT!

Now, the most recent in the push out of progressiveness is an ambush on the Sunshine Ordinance.  The Sunshine Ordinance was put into place in the 1990’s as a move towards open government.  Open Govt. is the wave of the future and is oh so needed in maintaining a govt. without egregious corruption.    Greed and corruption is what is taking the soul out of this city to turn a penny for a few powerful players.  This city has had a history with backroom dealings and shady plays.  Every time it starts getting out of control, it takes its toll on the long term residents that have made this place so attractive in the first place.  The Sunshine Ordinance has the requirement of placing a few appointments into our city govt.  However, recently, their appointments of the incumbents as well as well qualified new possibilities for their appointments were denied or to say it in the phrasing of the SF Guardian “refused to seat two candidates” and told them to come back to them with a new list of possible apointees.  It is all messy and super shady and now to me very obvious that OPEN GOVERNMENT AND ANYTHING THAT MAY STAND IN THE WAY OF WHAT THE BIG MONEY PLAYERS ARE UNDER ATTACK AND ARE TRYING TO BE WIPED OUT COMPLETELY.  This is not good at all.

For those who have recently moved to this city, it may not be as apparent to you what is happening.  You may think that all of this city growth and redevelopment areas are great, you are wrong.  Not saying that growth is bad or that building and redeveloping is bad too, but when it is to eradicate an entire community that has been living in their neighborhood for generations just to get greedy hands on that lucrative property it is WRONG.  This has been done to every single corner of our city except the lower eastern corner of Bayview/Hunters Point and Visitation Valley (vis. valley has been spared due to its such south local.)  This is systematically ridding SF of more of its ethnic residents and their neighborhoods has been going on (think western addition redevelopment) for a LONG time leading us to now where the percentages of black and hispanic populations have been cut down to single digits where in the past, the black and the spanish community has been a major part of the city’s fabric.

It is just like a slow bad dream coming to fruition.  Greed and power has got to be put into check and seen for what it is right now in San Francisco.  We have a heavy and colorful history of fighting against ‘the man’ and hopefully it will continue on in activist movements and rebel voices.  Remember that there is a lot more to any story coming from city hall than they are going to ever advertise.  And that sometimes it is not worth the pretty skyline and high property values to lose its soul and flavor of the great city of San Francisco.

Our Sheriff has been witch hunted by the conservatives that took over SF city govt.

This is my plea to our dear citizens of San Francisco.  Please take a closer look at this case for outing Ross Mirkirimi our newly elected sheriff.  This was not a shock to me that they would try something like this.

After the election i was talking with some friends about the outcome of our new city government officials.  I found it VERY peculiar that almost every post EXCEPT our sheriff’s election went to the most conservative candidate.  San Francisco has not nor has ever been conservative.  Unless there are seriously not any true local residents that go back farther than 6 or 8 years and everyone that used to live in SF has left….  I know it has become much more gentrified in San Francisco within the last 18 years, but to remove the deep seeded neighborhood activism and liberal stances i dont think would happen.  At least not this fast.

What makes this city so awesome is the residents abilities to think for themselves.  Not to be sheep.  Not to believe everything you hear even twice!  I hear the chatter in the streets but none of it on the news.  Everyone, EVERYONE I have talked to about this case has said it is extremely strange.  How is it that the wife doesnt want to press charges, or even testify yet, the case revolves around her.  Have you EVER heard of a district attorney filing a restraining order for ANYONE other than themselves??  NEVER!  I did not even know it could be done personally.

The far left that is doing a good job of taking over our fair city, has taken what i would regard as yes, Mr. Sheriff, a personal matter, and made it a huge ordeal just to slander Mr. Mirkarimi’s reputation in order to get him out of the only office that has still some power outside city hall.

I do not condone what happened.  He did behave badly, but THIS… THIS WHAT THEY HAVE DONE is more abusive to anyone’s civil rights and personal rights than him brusing his wife on the arm.  He did not hit her, he did not slap her, he did not lock her in their home, he didnt take away her communication devices.  He grabbed her too hard while in an argument.  This is not right, but it not anywhere close to bad enough to have to go to jail for or even worse… resign.

Hold on tight for all of us on the right Mr. Mirkarimi!!   You represented me for years in 94117, please dont let them take the best city government official we’ve got taken away!  Dont let them prop 8 you!!  We all support you!

DO NOT RESIGN!!!
