Lets remember that warm day in October when the earth REALLY shook!

I like to remember things as they were when they happened.  I find my own personal memory faulty and i do not trust modern day media editing!  So… Lets watch once again, right from the footage that aired back then.  I remember that day in 1989 when i was waiting for my ride home from swim team practice, less than 10 miles from the epicenter!  You could definitely say i was there!

…And a friendly reminder that everywhere SOME natural disaster can hit at any time.  Get that emergency kit ready.  You need enough food and water (and pet food) for at least 3 days per person!

I could not have been closer to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake epicenter….

Video

When the quake struck at 5:04pm, I was at my High School. I was waiting for my mom after swim team practice. Our school was off of Old San Jose Rd. which was about 8 miles directly south of Loma Prieta. It was pretty crazy to say the least.

I remember a lot of things about the earthquake and the chaos that ensued but one of the biggest things that stands out in my mind was the sense of community that was formed out of necessity. We did not have the bullshit of all of the red tape, or social parameters that we so strictly live by these days. It was neighbor helping neighbor and everyone did help. It was effortless. It was smooth and efficient. It was beautiful. When i think about how society is breaking down with all of the corruption and greed that we are drowning in today vanishes when the structure of our society gets shook up. We dont need some committee or rule telling us every inch how to live our lives. We KNOW how to live our lives. And without that meddling, true community sprouts up effortlessly. We dont need more laws and groups telling us what is good. We as humans KNOW what is good. If we could get less interference, we would be able to see that we do good things because that is our nature… not because we are told to and if we dont we get into trouble.

While i am waiting patiently for our next big shaker so that rents go down, i from time to time watch this video to remember just who is in charge… hint… it aint us!

MY new years resolution is…Make a Home Earthquake Kit | | Totally Unprepared

I was born and raised in this fine bay area of ours.  Way back in 1989, i was living in Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County.  I was at swim practice when the Loma Preita earthquake of 89′ hit.  I was about 8 miles from the epicenter.  I KNOW earthquakes.  I know how lucky i was back then, to have had a pantry full of canned goods, a big deck and a bbq, Coleman camping equipment including a stove and lights,  sleeping bags, and pet food right at hand.  Our house did not fare too badly (unlike 2 friends of ours who lost their whole homes when they slid off their foundations which were on steep grades.)  Our house kinda became the block depot.  We all congregated around the pool and pretty much stayed outside for the most part for the first couple days due to our nerves and the after shocks.

I have lived 22 years since that day earthquake damage free.  I know this is not going to last forever, but when it is too late, it is TOO LATE!  It doesnt hurt me a bit to pull a few things here and a few there as i come across them and begin to build a survival kit.  I will be thanking myself if we do end up having another big earth event (after seeing Japan’s tsunami, anything is possible and even more reason to!) and if we dont, i dont have to have any of the worry that i am unprepared.

Bottom line, it only takes a tiny bit of effort and a few minutes and it IS my New Years resolution for 2012 and it should be one of yours too!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!  PLEASE BE SAFE!

:)
